| A post-apocalyptic disco breakdown! A riotous post-punk dance-off! Double-time Las Vegas-showroom rock & roll! No matter what the clever typifying, New York’s !!! are just as innovative as they are entertaining. The octet, who prefer the pronunciation of Chk Chk Chk (although any repeated exclamation will do), craft a slip-shop and grimy dance-punk unlike anything else out there. Their new album, “Myth Takes,” is a more mature !!!, although that’s not saying much. There are still copious amounts of greasy beats and sexy, looping basslines. Although on this album, singer Nic Offer has ditched the Footloose quotes for rambling, esoteric musings. For this album, the band had the opportunity to record in Nashville, utilizing the help of producer Justin Van Der Volgen and NY duo The Brothers. The highlight of the album is “Bend Over Beethoven,” an 8-minute epic that goes from focused dance-punk to jam band and back again, without even stopping for a breath. And the relentlessness of this track is illustrative of the album as a whole: there’s not time to stop, you have to hold on ride it out. |
