Try and pinpoint the soulful sound of London’s latest songbird Amy Winehouse and you’ll end up with a juxtaposition of tough-as-nails lyrics and butter-soft melodies. The sultry jazz nouveau/R+B beats, punctuated by husky vocals reminiscent of Motown’s leading ladies, underscore Winehouse’s clever (and often harsh) writing style.
The 23 year-old Southgate native certainly paid her industry dues, from a short-lived stunt at the age of 10 as an amateur rapper (in a self-described "little white Jewish Salt 'n' Pepa” group) to a platinum-selling debut album, Frank (2003-2004). Winehouse recently snagged a BRIT award in February for Best British Female Artist, almost a year after the release of her second album Back to Black (2006-2007). A familiar figure in the British media, the manic-depressive Winehouse became popular tabloid fodder as she struggled to overcome a history of drug addiction, anorexia, and bulimia. No worries, Miss Winehouse- Mark Ronson’s got your back. The überfamous DJ-producer sums her up quite nicely: “She's not into self-infatuation and she doesn't chase fame. She's lucky that she's that good, because she doesn't have to." We couldn’t agree more.
