| Now I know that 27 is a bit young to be approaching “legend” status, but it seems that Connor Oberst, band leader of Omaha, Nebraska’s Bright Eyes, is quickly approaching that plateau. From the age of 13 he has been in many bands and further developing his musical skill. In recent times, the music that Oberst and friends have released as Bright Eyes has been slowly morphing from heart-on-sleeve emotional ravings to a socio-political balladeer. Oberst sings from a very nuanced position too, he is not content to report on the goings-on and rail against any perceived injustice, instead he is willing to get in the thick of it and cry out with his heart and soul. Bright Eyes’ new album, “Cassadaga,” continues this theme. Named after a Florida town populated by mediums and spiritualists, “Cassadaga” has been earning Oberst shining comparisons to Bob Dylan and Neil Young, comparisons that in addition to being great are also not entirely inaccurate. On the album, Oberst continues to wax poetic on the ills of society with his patented quivering voice and an expanded group of players that include frequent collaborator M. Ward, Rachael Yamagata, and Stacy and Sherri DuPree of Eisley. |
