Obituary
DATE: 11/05/2008 15:55:09 / MOOD: sad

  I was shocked when just a minute ago i found out Michael Crichton, my favorite writer, died of cancer at the age of 66.  Asimov's gone, Clarke's gone, Vonnegut's gone, now Crichton.  His next (and last) novel was due out this month, but its release has been postponed indefinitely.  I know of no other details.  I am stunned and appalled.  There are some fine contemporary  writers such as Greg Benford, Greg Bear, and Larry Niven, but no one could do what Michael could.  The last time I felt the loss of an intellect like this was in '92 when Asimov died.  The world of scientific imagination will never see the likes of him.  Goodbye Michael, and thank you.

VOTING INTIMIDATION
DATE: 10/29/2008 10:44:17 / MOOD: angry

  Looking at all the polls it looks like a landslide for Senator Obama.  Maybe so, but the efforts to rig this election like in 2000 and 2004 are going on on a massive scale.  I know i don't have to urge you all of the importance of voting Democratic next Tuesday, but if you need more incentive, i urge you to go to www.bradblog.com and you will be amazed and enraged at how this one could still be stolen.  My home state is one of the worst, but please visit this site and in particular see the fraud on electronic voting machines.  If you can, insist on a paper ballot.  Do not be intimidated by threats because the name on your ID does not exactly match your voter registration.

  If you expect any trouble, take a video camera or a video phone with you.  For guidelines on using these, go to  www.VideotheVote.org .  Expect to be challenged, especially if you are a new voter.  In Indiana, and in some states you can actually vote if you live under a bridge--just draw a diagram on your voter registration form.  On Barack Obama's website you can get detailed information on voter requirements state by state.

  If you read this before 6:00pm Eastern tonight you can watch the guys who run these two blogs on Democracy Now at 6:00pm on Link TV--channel 375 on Direct TV.  Or go to www.DemocracyNow.org

More on crappy generics
DATE: 06/24/2008 11:28:43 / MOOD: angry

  My last blog entry was about crappy, inferior generics.  I want to say everything i said about over-the-counter pain medicine goes DOUBLE for generic estrogens.  If any of you are on hormone replacement therapy or know a woman who is, please advise them--or any man who lives with them.  This goes in particular for Wal-Mart and how they're supposed to be doing everybody such a big favor by giving their $4.00 generics.

  I have just seen a case of a woman who was taking a name brand Estradiol replacement who tried one of Wal-Mart's generics and felt so horrible she couldn't concentrate at work.  If the cause hadn't been figured out in time she could have lost her job, or even branded a head case, which she is not.

  Hormone replacement therapy is a very tricky business and if a molecule or two is off, all hell can break loose.  In this case i think it was just that there very little Estradiol in these pills, that most of the pills consisted of fillers.  After seeing somebody go through this i am VERY PISSED OFF and if this post helps anyone avoid this, it's well worth the trouble of writing it.

BEWARE Generic Ibuprofen, Alleve, etc.
DATE: 04/30/2008 07:50:18 / MOOD: angry

If you take I buprofen or Alleve, or any other in this class of drugs, (called NSAIDs) DO NOT take generics; take ONLY the name brands.  This goes for the prescription ones, like celebrex, only THERE IS NO NSAID any more effective than Ibuprofen; some are easier on the stomach, but i have no trouble with the gelcaps.

  This from a doctor:  GENERIC IBUPROFEN COMES FROM CHINA, INDIA, AND SOME OTHER SUCH PLACES AND IS NO GOOD.  I've not heard that is harmful, but with lead in the Chinese crap i would use caution.

  Most of you are young and healthy enough not to use it on a regular basis but if, like me, you bust your ass in the gym you probably have chickenshit little injuries that Ibuprofen helps a lot.  So if you take it or any of these drugs on a regular basis BE WARNED.

  I feel the press of my dead children crowding close to me            & nbsp;           &nbs p;            & nbsp;           &nbs p;            & nbsp;

  And with every day that passes that's one less day to see                         &nb sp;                         &nb sp;

  Carson sings Feliz Navidad that was his favorite song             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;             ;

  And the only comfort left to me is that i don't have long             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;             ;

  Sparkie worried about me when i was alone           &nbs p;            & nbsp;           &nbs p;            & nbsp;           &nbs p;            & nbsp;           &nbs p;

  Took care of me when i was sick and mommy was long gone             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;

&n bsp; I'd play a Martin guitar she'd sing an old folk song             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;

  When we could look and see the lights of the bay in old Hong Kong             ;            &n bsp;             ;

  ;

  It's not like i'm going anywhere they're coming back for me            & nbsp;           &nbs p;            & nbsp;           &nbs p;            & nbsp;

  If this is it i don't care it's with them i should be            & nbsp;           &nbs p;            & nbsp;           &nbs p;            & nbsp;           &nbs p;

  My heart is barely beating my breath is almost gone             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;             ;

  And outside the window i see the glow that is my last dawn             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;             ;

  They should still be here when you're long in the ground           &nb sp;                         &nb sp;                         &nb sp;

  But it works out sometimes to be the other way around           &nb sp;                         &nb sp;                         &nb sp;

  It's your reward for hubris for living much too long             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;             ;

  Before you sail to see the lights of the Bay of old Hong Kong             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;             ;

  I know cause you woke up the cat                         &nb sp;                         &nb sp;                         &nb sp;

  Guess all your days you got to have it both ways             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;

  But around here it can't be like that             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;             ;            &n bsp;

 That's a good question, Vanilla Skye.  If you mean the part in the beginning where the apes kill the game with the long bone, i understood it to symbolize the transition from a vegetarian diet to an omnivorous one, which has advantages for survival, simply because only animal protein has complete protein.  The implication seemed to be that the aliens may have helped them figure that out, since i think there was a monolith in that time somewhere.  And there may have been a scene with a lot of bones around showing that they really knocked themselves out after that, but it's been a long time since i've seen it.

  One thing about this film is that there's not a lot of dialog, and people are so used to films with dialog, that i hear people say they didn't get the film at all.  This includes a lot of very smart people.

  The story may have taken liberties with the evolutionary timeline a little.  It is supposed that neanderthals went extinct during the ice age because they didn't adapt to meat-eating, whereas cro-magnon did and survived.  But the apes in the film looked like chimps, which these apes wouldn't have.

  Thank you again for this question.  I'm not sure if i answered it, but it's not that common to get a reaction from a post.

Indianapolis Concert

  Just in case any of you who are in Indiana and happen to be BoDeans fans, they'll be at the Vogue April 11.  I've seen them there twice before, but it's my old lady's birthday and it was either this concert or Johnny Mathis in Louisville in May, and that would be a little much.
