Anti-Hunger Protests Rock Haiti
DATE: 07/23/2008 14:38:01 / MOOD: sad

Demonstrations that started in Le Cayes against soaring food prices spread across Haiti to Petit-Goagve, Gonaïves, Aquin and to the capital, Port-au-Prince. Anger over rising prices has been building for many months with basic food stuffs increasingly out of reach for the poor. Tires were set ablaze in the streets and thrown together to form barricades that paralyzed traffic for days. Read the entire article by Nazaire and myself here at Upside Down World.

Gun Control
DATE: 06/27/2008 10:23:49 / MOOD: disappointed

Dear US Supreme Court,

In light of yesterday's court ruling following by Mr. Scalia's charming letter to the people of this free country, I feel compelled to write a letter back.

I must preface this letter with saying that I neither consider myself a leftist nor have much interest in gun control.  What I do consider myself is a novice historian and a concerned citizen of the Country I call my home.  I am concerned because of a government and court system that abuses its powers.  I am concerned for a country that mis-uses its own Constitution.

The original understanding of the Bill of Rights, including the Second Amendment, was reflected in the Bill’s preamble. That preamble says that the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution “in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its [that is, the federal government’s] powers.” It was not about empowering federal judges to strike down state laws, in other words, but about limiting federal power.

The Supreme Court reflected this understanding in the 1833 case of Barron v. Baltimore (1833). There, for a unanimous Court, Chief Justice John Marshall said that the Bill of Rights limited only the powers of the federal government, not those of the states. This was the only significant decision in which Marshall came out for a limitation on federal power; he did so because what he was saying was indisputable.

Yesterday's decision was ruling against the original understanding of the Second Amendment and for that I am extremely disappointed.

Thank you for your time,

Gretta

DCMA = U.G.L.Y.
DATE: 05/08/2008 12:17:31 / MOOD: disappointed

I am starting to believe that the ugliest clothing line (considering that I don't even let Heidiwood compete) is DCMA Collective...the line owned by the fashion-forward brothers Madden.

Check out this woman's tee

or this super classy belt buckle

or better yet...check out Paris Hilton decked in DCMA from head to toe...

I've done a lot of stupid things for men, but never anything THIS horrendous.  And God knows, if Paris looks this bad in DCMA, imagine how the rest of us would look.

Haven't We Had Enough?
DATE: 03/18/2008 09:50:20 / MOOD: angry

Flanked with group songs, solo debuts, burlesque shows, vegas clubs, reality shows and spin off reality shows, what better for the Pussy Cat Dolls creater, Robin Antin to plaster her name on than a new skanky fashion line?  The new collection of lingerie is known as "Pussycat Dolls...Shhh," and it took the final spot at the Los Angeles Fashion week, closing the week with a bang (no pun intended).

The models were dressed in brightly hued ruffled panties paired with push-up demicup bras or camisoles; boy-cut bottoms with side ties and matching bras; and tiny thongs matched with equally teeny bras. And just when the world thought that it couldn't get any less high fashion, halfway through the runway show, four strippers hit the stage, wooden chairs and all, and peeled off a couple of layers while doing some painful-looking contortions, to the tune of "Feeling Good," sung by Pussycat Dolls star and lead singer Nicole Scherzinger.

All in all, I can hate on the classless clothes and skanky show all I want, but one thing is for certain...that Robin Antin is a marketing machine that just won't quite!  Now I just can't wait for Pussycat Doll sented condoms or something of the like to hit the market in 2009!
